UPDATE 5/12/07: The linebacker has signed his one-year deal with the Bengals, a contract that would cost the Bengals $1.5 million at the most if Hartwell were to meet all of his incentives.

UPDATE 5/4/07:
Hartwell’s reunion with Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, one of the men who drafted him in Baltimore in 2001, has been five years in the making. Speculation is he’ll get a shot at the starter’s spot at the right outside spot as the club’s most experienced backer in the wake of Brian Simmons’ release.

The signing of linebacker Ed Hartwell by the Bengals is being held up.  Hartwell's wife, Lisa, is in labor with the couple's first child in an Atlanta hospital.

A third option: Sign a free- agent starter such as Atlanta's Edgerton Hartwell,...Hartwell was a three-year standout alongside Ray Lewis in the Baltimore Ravens' 3-4 defense from 2002-04, but was plagued by injuries to his Achilles and knees during his two years in Atlanta.

2005: Started all five games played, recording 31 tackles and one pass defensed, before injuring his Achilles and being placed on Injured Reserve on October 10. Tied for the team-high with 13 tackles in addition to one pass defensed at Seattle (9/18). Recorded nine tackles at Buffalo (9/25) in a defensive effort that allowed only 75 yards passing. Had four tackles vs. New England (10/9) before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an Achilles injury

2004: In final season with Ravens played in all 16 games with 15 starts ... Tallied 141 tackles, second only to Ray Lewis, while also adding a forced fumble ... Was a major factor in the Ravens defense allowing just 3.6 yards per rush (tied for second in the AFC).
